If we only wrote what we knew, then we'd be reading a lot of books about writing books! (And there are quite a few out there). I take inspiration from my life and my experiences and then just go from there. But like you, one of my stories involves a murder, and I can assure you I have never had anything to do with something as sinister as that! Writing what you know doesn’t really allow for a lot of creativity. If we only wrote what we knew, then we’d be reading a lot of books about writing books! (And there are quite a few out there).
